Truckers Protest Bad Roads, Block Auchi-Benin Highway

For hours on Friday, hundreds of protesting truckers blocked the Auchi-Benin highway in Edo state to protest the dire road condition.

For the duration of the protest, commuters on the road were blocked as all adjacent roads that could serve as detours were also blocked.

Angry drivers blocked the road as motorists were forced to seek alternate routes into and out of the state.

The protesting truckers, who carried signs with various inscriptions, vowed to continue their protest until their demands are met.

Saturday Tribune noticed a long strip of articulated vehicles parked indiscriminately, piled up along the Jattu junction and the Auchi Polytechnic gate.

One of the protest coordinators, Mr Donald Etamobe, who spoke to reporters, said, “We will not stop this protest for good roads until the federal government addresses it.” . Kadiri said.

“The demonstration has become inevitable due to the bad road from Auchi to Benin which is impassable at the moment. Subsequently, the barricade of alternative routes by the Edo State government, hence the peaceful protest,” Etamobe said.

A commuter, Lawal Abdullahi, told reporters he parked his car in Aviele and took a motorbike to his office in Auchi.

Another of the motorists trapped in the traffic jam, Jimoh Kadiri, said he had been in one spot on the road for more than seven hours.

Mr. Kadiri described the development as bad for the state and the country. He, however, called on the federal government to repair the road.
