Truck Driver Arrested After Running Two Police Officers To Death In Ekiti
Nigerian police, Ekiti State Command, have arrested a truck driver for allegedly running two police officers to death.
Command spokesman Sunday Abutu while confirming the incident to reporters revealed the unfortunate event that happened yesterday morning.
According to Abutu, the officers came from Iworoko Ekiti to their duty station in Ado Ekiti when the truck rammed them.
The police were on their way. The truck driver was negotiating a diversion placed in the road by the construction company rehabilitating the Ado-Iworoko-Ifaki road by turning left and passed them.
“We learned that they were both dead. The driver of the dumpster was arrested while the corpses were deposited at the morgue of Ekiti State Teaching Hospital,” Abutu noted.
An eyewitness who confirmed the incident, noted that the police were on a motorbike when the truck driver rammed them at a point where traffic was diverted for reconstruction purposes on the Ado-Iworoko split road.
The officers were heading towards the heart of the city as the truck headed towards the direction of Iworoko when the driver suddenly crossed their lane due to the road diversion and ran over them,” the eyewitness said, who pleaded not to be mentioned in the press. .
Reacting to the incident, Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps, Ekiti State Command, Olusola Joseph, lamented the violation of traffic rules by motorists.
The FRSC boss has warned drivers plying all roads in the state to control their speed to curb senseless carnage.
Joseph said: “Our drivers have to be safety conscious. Some of these premature deaths could have been avoided if we had been careful on the roads. I call on our people to always respect road safety measures for the safety of lives”.
