Operators of articulated vehicles, mainly trailers and tankers, have blocked all main entrances to Bida, Niger state, following the state government’s decision to close the Minna-Bida road to vehicles articulated following the current dualisation of the road.

It’s just as the popular Apapa-Oshodi highway in Lagos has also seen a lot of traffic, with tankers blocking the highway.

In addition, truck drivers have blocked the Yola-Gombe road, protesting what they call the continued extortion of money from their members by police on the highway.

LEADERSHIP Weekend observed that since Thursday, drivers had blocked the roads with their vehicles, insisting that they would not allow anyone in and out of Bida until the government opened the Minna-Bida road to them.

The Niger state government had blocked the road to articulated vehicles for the past six months to allow the contractor in charge of the dualization to do his job properly.

But the drivers told LEADERSHIP Weekend that the situation was having negative effects on them as the alternative Bida-Lapai-Lambata routes were no longer passable.

It has been observed that most motorists by the thousands have abandoned their cars, while commercial motorcyclists are doing a booming business charging up to N5,000 per trip.

A traveler, Usman Mohammed, who said he had walked all the way from Lagos and spent the night on the road blocked as the main entrance from the Lagos axis to Bida until about 10 kilometers to Wuya, along the road Bida in Mokwa, was blocked.

Usman said, “The tankers and trailers blocked the road; the same goes for the Minna Bida axis as well as the Lemu and Lapai / Agaie axis. So I took an Okada (commercial motorcycle) from Wuya near Kakankpangi to take another car in Minna ”.

A resident of Bida Abdul Abdulkadir said: “All roads in Bida have been blocked, including the Gbazhi area before the Emir’s Palace and Esso, the Siriku junction has all been blocked as well as some street roads have been blocked. been blocked. We in Buda are concerned that this will also have an impact on security ”.

Works and Infrastructure Commissioner Hon.Mamman Musa told LEADERSHIP Weekend that the government will not open the road and the Minna-Bida Road Safety and Security Coordination Committee has been tasked with do whatever is necessary.

He said state governor Abubakar Sani Bello requested that the wrong spots on the Lambata-Bida road be immediately leveled to allow articulated vehicles to pass the road as an alternative route.

Truck drivers who blocked the Yola-Gombe road said they were protesting what they called the continued extortion of money from their members by police on the highway.

Adamawa Police Command spokesperson DSP Yahaya Suleiman confirmed the development.

Travelers and other road users were trapped for more hours.

Suleiman further said that Adamu Alhaji, the police commissioner, ordered the immediate investigation into the case in order to disentangle the officers allegedly involved in the extortion.

The Numan area command, in case of emergency, will transfer the accused officers to the state command for a speedy investigation.
