Speeding dump truck runs over biker in detained Kandivali
A 25-year-old man was killed on Tuesday morning in a hit-and-run near Kandivali (E) after a dump truck overturned him. The victim was driving a motorbike and a friend on the bus was a passenger when the dumper struck his vehicle from behind and the youth lost control of the vehicle, causing him to fall, only to be crushed. A case of reckless driving and negligent death has been registered at Samta Nagar police station.
According to police sources, the incident happened around 1:15 a.m. on Tuesday, when the deceased, identified as Satish Kumar Gautam, was traveling to Dahisar to meet his girlfriend. In his statement, Gautam’s friend, who was a passenger at the time of the incident, said: “Gautam was tense and asked me to pick him up from Gokuldham in Goregaon (E) at midnight. When I arrived there he was talking to his girlfriend, who asked me to bring Gautam to meet her in Dahisar.”
In a hurry, Gautam insisted on riding the complainant’s motorcycle, MH 02 BV 2330, while the latter was seated in the back. When the duo reached near the Poisar metro station on the Western Express highway near Kandivali (E), a speeding dump truck, MH 02 ER 7933, hit their two-wheeler from behind, causing them to fall the plaintiff on his left, while Gautam fell on the spot.
The high-speed dumper, however, ran over Gautam and crushed him under the wheel, and fled. In the meantime, the plaintiff had suffered injuries. Both riders were rushed to Shatabdi Civic Hospital, where Gautam was pronounced dead on arrival, while the passenger is treated.
Subsequently, the police requested details from the RTO on the basis of the registration number and incarcerated him under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for reckless driving and negligent death. The accused, identified as Vipin Avadhu Pal, 24, was later arrested at Pimpripada in Malad (E). He was brought before a local magistrate’s court and taken into custody.
