KUALA LUMPUR: Proton Holdings Bhd has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoA) with smart Automobile Co Ltd (smart) to introduce the latter’s range of New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) to the growing ASEAN automotive market.
In a statement today, Proton said the deal would see the two parties work together through Proton Edar, which would be appointed as smart’s importer, distributor and reseller in Malaysia and Thailand, and smart Automobile (Nanning) Sales Co Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary. subsidiary of the high-end electric vehicle (EV) brand, which would act as the gateway to smart automobiles in the region.
“With the MoA, Proton is taking the first steps in its strategic NEV journey. We will be able to gain experience selling, servicing and recharging NEVs and develop the skills we need to be a force in the NEV growing ASEAN sector.
“It’s also an opportunity to tap into smart’s customer base, which will open up more opportunities for the Proton brand,” said Proton President Syed Faisal Albar.
The domestic automaker noted that according to a forecast by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the NEV market will reach around 10 million units in Southeast Asia by 2025.
With a new portfolio of all-electric products set to launch in the coming years, smart will be well positioned to take advantage of the region’s growth, he said.
Proton also said the MoA would enable Proton Edar to establish a multi-tiered sales and service network in Malaysia and Thailand, as well as a brand experience center and a number of retail outlets, providing local markets for sales and after-sales services for smart. NEV.
Currently, he said there are no plans to collaborate beyond the principles of the agreement.
