So sad, an articulated truck recently killed a talented taekwondo medalist in Nasarawa State. This happened just a week after winning the silver medal for Team Nasarawa at the recent Bayelsa Open Taekwondo competition. Super talented athlete, Maria Uchenna Raphael was killed in a car accident involving a truck in Lafia on Friday August 26, 2022. It must be a very big loss for the Nasarawa Taekwondo team and her family.

The shocking news of the unfortunate incident was shared by the Nasarawa State Ministry of Youth and Sports Development on Saturday. According to the statement, Uchenna went to buy some items at a grocery store along UAC road shortly after returning from the competition held in Yenagoa, the capital of Bayelsa. She was involved in the tragic incident while grocery shopping. Uche Amos, spokesperson for the Nasarawa Department of Sports, described the death of the athlete as a huge loss and that his absence would be deeply felt in the state. It was revealed that she was crushed to death by an articulated vehicle on the fateful day she returned from the successful exit to Bayelsa.

Maria Uchenna Raphael – the taekwondo silver medalist crushed to death after returning from a competition

The deceased athlete was part of the Narasawa team that won the bronze medal in the women’s -46 kg category at the 15th edition of the Panamanian West and Cottage Mills African Taekwondo Championship which took place held in August in Lagos. His immense contribution allowed Nasarawa to take fourth place in the medal table. She also won the silver medal at the 2022 Bayelsa Open Taekwondo Championships held from August 21-24. RIP Maria Uchenna Raphael.
