Norton Electric Motorcycle being developed in association with six other brands and the government
Norton is one of the best known motorcycle manufacturers in the world. The brand has made many interesting motorcycles in the past and continues to do so today. In a recent development, TVS Motor Company ended up buying the brand, which breathed new life into the brand.
Since the world is moving towards electric mobility, it is quite obvious that all motorcycle manufacturers should eventually include an electric model if they do not go completely electric. As a result, there is a sudden rush to develop and launch electric motorcycles. However, it is an expensive and resource-intensive affair and it is always beneficial to have partnerships.
Norton Motorcycles now seems to have found the right partner. The Advanced Propulsion Center is an arm of the UK government that has always encouraged the development and use of electric vehicles with the aim of seeing a zero pollution automotive industry in the UK.
Norton seems like the perfect motorcycle manufacturer for the job. However, the project will not be limited to the only motorcycle. Instead, the project will also include six other brands that will partner with Norton. These brands will each develop specific components for the upcoming motorcycle, gaining additional expertise in the field of electric vehicle development.
While Norton will be the brand that designs, develops and assembles the bike, the other partners will develop a few specific components. Delta Cosworth will be involved in the design and development of the battery. HiSpeed will develop and manufacture the electric motor and inverter.
Formaplex will bring its expertise in the manufacture of precision components. M&I materials will work on the cooling system while INDRA takes care of the load. Warwick Engineering Group at the University of Warwick will work on battery technology, modeling and tool chain development.
The University of Warwick is also involved in the development of the Triumph TE-1 electric motorcycle and brings with it significant expertise to the Zero Emission Norton project. The project will last about 30 months and at the end of this period we should be able to see a prototype electric motorcycle.
Since TVS Motor Company now owns Norton, some of the technologies developed under this project may also end up in the Indian market. As far as we know, the Norton electric motorcycle could become the first electric superbike to be launched in India.
Thoughts on the development of the Norton electric motorcycle
The promise of an electric vehicle is very easy to see and it’s also easy to see why brands are diving straight into the electric vehicle space. The Norton electric motorcycle could well become one of the best electric superbikes in the world given the number of brands involved in its development.
