I-95 crash live: Three dead after 17 cars crash in Florida ‘super fog’ event
‘Super fog’: Weather event may have played role in fatal I-95 crashes
At least three people have died after more than a dozen vehicles crashed into a pileup on a highway in Volusia County, Florida, according to local reports.
The Miami Herald reports that at least five accidents have occurred on I-95 in Edgewater, Florida. The incident unfolded around 1.30am on Thursday when visibility was severely affected due to fog and controlled burning in the area.
At least one tractor-trailer was involved, authorities said. A child was airlifted to hospital in stable condition, the herald reported.
It is not known how many people were injured in the crashes, but a number were taken to local hospitals for treatment.
Much of the blame for the accident was attributed to a “super fog” event in which smoke and humidity mix with cool air and reduce visibility levels to less than 10 feet.
I-95 remains closed near Edgewater and northbound lanes will need to be redone before they can reopen.

What is “super fog”?
According to the National Weather Service, “super fog” forms when a mixture of smoke and moisture released by moist, smoky organic matter such as brush, leaves and trees, mixes with warmer air. fresh and almost saturated.
Visibility is reduced to less than 10 feet. In light wind conditions, super fog meanders through areas of low ground such as creek beds or drainage ditches.
Super fog can be very dangerous when present on highways and has been the cause of several large, multi-vehicle pile-ups.
