Gardai arrest truck carrying a helicopter as it drives through County Limerick

Gardai stopped a lorry carrying this helicopter as it passed through a village in County Limerick.

Photographs of the red and white two-seater helicopter sitting on a recovery truck, outside Henry Street Garda station in Limerick City, were later shared on social media.

The helicopter was carried on the back of a transport lorry as it drove through Caherconlish, Co Limerick, last Tuesday.

Gardai arrested the driver of the transporter truck on the High Street in the village, about 15km from Limerick city, and subsequently seized the helicopter, the transporter truck, along with a motorbike, a 4×4 vehicle and a trailer.

The driver was taken to a Garda station in Limerick City for search and later released.

The helicopter and other vehicles that were seized by the gardai were also released by the gardai.

Asked about the seizure of the helicopter, a Garda spokesperson replied: “Gardaí arrested a man in his 40s, who was driving a transport truck in Caherconlish, Co. Limerick on January 25, 2022.

“The man was taken to Mayorstone Garda station to be searched under Section 23 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977 and the vehicle seized.”

“The man and the vehicles were released following a search.”

The spokesperson said the man had not been arrested.

“I can tell you the man has not been arrested. Section 23 of the Misuse of Drugs Act 1977 is a power of detention for the purpose of search and it is not a arrest.

“The man and vehicles have been searched. Nothing has been found. All vehicles/property have been returned to the owner.”
