Dangerous motorcycle activity “Lane Splitting” leads to death of motorcyclist Aurora – CBS Denver

AURORA, Colorado (CBS4) – A motorcyclist was killed Saturday night in Aurora while driving between cars at the intersection of Blackhawk Street and Mississippi Avenue. The rider crashed into a tow truck that was turning left.

This is called “lane splitting”: motorcycles maneuver between cars. Often, when a light is red, motorcycles move between stopped vehicles to pass in front of them at the intersection.

It’s a practice Megan Burchstead sees regularly from her apartment perched in Denver’s LoDo neighborhood.

“I have seen and recorded (it) countless times. The main thing they are doing downtown is probably doubling the lanes, ”she said.

The Internet is full of videos showing the consequences of doubling the tracks. One shows a biker crushing his motorcycle. He couldn’t see when he tried to walk around a truck.

Sport bikes kept LoDo residents awake at night with engine revving and other issues.

Burchstead is among those affected.

“I had to find a hotel for a week before I only got 3 to 4 hours a night, unfortunately. “

She kept a diary of some of the incidents, including 8-10 motorcyclists on the sidewalk and then more. Others go to red lights.

Burchstead says his calls to police have elicited little visible reaction.

“One thing they could do is stop them when they are doing obviously illegal things like dividing the lane, going the wrong way down sidewalks.”

It comes at a time when motorcycle-related deaths have become increasingly common. Burchstead, she spoke to operators and 911 agents in Denver Police District 6.

DPD says they will contact Burchstead to discuss possible solutions. They also provided this statement to CBS4:

“DPD has invested resources in the fight against street racing throughout the city – leading prevention and enforcement efforts based on complaints and data from residents – and, of course, strongly discourages motorists and motorcyclists not to run and to speed because of the significant danger these behaviors represent for all road users. “
