A major accident occurred while overtaking the Bernina Pass on Monday afternoon. Two people lost their lives in the process.

The accident happened after 2:45 p.m. on Monday. A motorcyclist (52) accompanied by his passenger (57) was from La Rosa on Berninastrasse in the canyon towards San Carlo. An Italian (40) and a Swiss (28) followed with their cars on the back of the motorcycle.

At the Plana Scura site, the two drivers tried to overtake each other, two cars collided.

The motorcycle was hit by one of the two vehicles. The motorcyclist fell and his pillar fell and struck the railing of the adjacent grassy embankment. Both were so seriously injured that they died instantly. Rescuers at the scene were unable to do anything for them.

After work at the crash site, Berninastrasse was reopened at 7 p.m. The cantonal police of Grisons are looking for people who may have been seen during the accident or who can provide information on the driving style of the vehicles involved.

“However, he was not a member of the club, but a friend,” a club official told Blick. The motorcycle club wrote on its Facebook page: “It is with great sadness, dismay and great pain that we announce the death of our friend. His death shocked us and suddenly took him away from us.
