Auto exports rebound in first quarter as pandemic situation improves globally
According to the latest data from SIAM, total vehicle exports in the April-June quarter of this fiscal year stood at 14,19,430 units, compared with 4,365,500 units in the same period of 2020-21 which was experienced massive disruption due to COVID lockdowns across the country, hampering sales as well as overseas shipments.
SIAM chief executive Rajesh Menon told PTI that while two-wheeler shipments were better than the previous three years, the export figures for passenger vehicles, three-wheelers and commercial vehicles had failed. still caught up with the figures for the first quarter of fiscal year 2018-2019.
“If we just compare the export figures for the first quarter of 2021-2022, two-wheelers have done better than the previous three years, however, the total number of exports of passenger vehicles, three-wheelers and commercial vehicles was higher in the first quarter of 2018-19, “he noted.
In the April-June quarter, the country’s passenger vehicle exports amounted to 1,27,115 units compared to 43,619 units in the same period of 2020-21.
Exports of passenger cars amounted to 79,376 units, shipments of commercial vehicles to 47,151 units and exports of vans to 588 units.
led the passenger vehicle segment with exports of 45,056 units, followed by Hyundai Motor India which shipped 29,881 units during the period.
Kia Motors deliveries amounted to 12,448 units while Volkswagen India contributed with 11,566 units in the quarter.
Two-wheeler exports amounted to 11.37,102 units over the April-June period compared to 3.37,983 units over the same period of FY20.
Likewise, commercial exports during the first quarter amounted to 16,006 units against 3,870 units over the period April-June 2020-21.
Tata Motors led the segment with a delivery of 6,653 units, followed by Mahindra & Mahindra with 3,931 units.
Three-wheeler exports amounted to 1,37,582 units over the period under review compared to 50,631 units in the first quarter of 2020-2021.
Domestic wholesale sales in all categories in the first quarter amounted to 31,80,039 units, compared to 1492,612 units in the period April-June 2020-21.
Comparatively, total shipments to the domestic market amounted to 60 84,478 units in the first quarter of fiscal year 2019-2020.
