The 650cc liquid-cooled parallel twin engine that does duty in many motorcycles in the Kawasaki range is also on board the 2022 Z650RS. Developing 67 horsepower and 47.2 lb-ft of torque, the 2022 Z650RS feels suitable for both open freeways and winding roads. The engine also looks nicer than the Ninja 650 and Z650.

Low-end and mid-range performance are what make this parallel twin a fan favorite. This bike accelerates cleanly from 2000 rpm and as a result, overtaking vehicles in cities and highways will be a snap. The smooth and crisp 6-speed gearbox with a sufficiently short initial gear and higher fifth and sixth gears also add to the driving experience.

Design is an area Kawasaki has nailed down. Coming in two color combinations, namely moondust / ebony metallic gray and candy emerald green, the 2022 Z650RS looks straight out of the ’70s. Shortened front fender, well-designed exhaust manifolds and gorgeous headlights LED circles add to the character.

The gold stripes on the tank make the Z650RS feel like a much more expensive motorcycle. Viewed from the side, the wheels are distinguished by the golden color that Kawasaki painted (for the color candy emerald green). Apart from that, the silver accents, LED tail light and turn signals, and reasonably wide 160 section tires also make the bike look better.

8 Comfortable ride quality is an added benefit

The Z650RS is primarily designed for having a good time on back roads, and for such a motorcycle, comfort is of great importance. Like the 2022 Z650, the 2022 Z650RS offers a soft suspension setup, which is neither too hard nor too soft. The front end is turned slightly to the softer side and this absorbs all the bumps and potholes in the road with excellence.

The rear suspension comes with adjustable preload and is similar to the front setup. As a result, both rider and passenger will enjoy an extremely comfortable ride quality, regardless of their speed. Even when speeds increase, the suspension doesn’t wallow, which is one of the main complaints about the Yamaha XSR700.

One of the main gripes bikers have with motorcycles belonging to the retro segment is the unsophisticated suspension setup on offer, which is mostly tuned for comfort. However, this is not the case with the Kawasaki Z650RS 2022. It comes with conventional telescopic forks with 4.9 “suspension travel for the front.

Even though the front is set on the softer side, the bike is precise enough in the corners. He could lean comfortably, grab onto the line, and exit corners quietly. The rear suspension is a horizontal rear linkage with adjustable spring load and works well to improve stability and cornering. The motorcycle is also not very affected by cross winds.

6 Not missing any important features

All the essential features needed for a retro motorcycle that costs nearly $ 9,000 are on board the Z650RS. Some of the engine management features, such as power assist and anti-slip clutch, dual throttles and fuel economy indicator, help create a more efficient and comfortable driving experience.

Chassis management functions such as ABS and rear-link horizontal rear suspension are also offered. The ABS is well calibrated and does not interfere too much while driving, unlike the Continental GT. There is a small digital display built in between the analog dials and which displays the gear position, odometer, temperature, fuel and many more. It’s bright and pretty crisp too.

It’s a liquid-cooled engine, so the sizable radiator that’s mounted up front helps to extract heat quite well. The heat is not projected onto the rider’s legs, unlike the Ducati Scrambler Icon Dark and the Triumph Street Twin. The radiator fan also runs very quietly, which is ideal for comfortable driving.

Even though the braking performance of some of the Kawasaki models of yesteryear was nothing out of the ordinary, the same is not true of the 2022 Kawasaki Z650RS. The front of this retro motorcycle comes with the dual disc of 300mm with 2 piston calipers and that contributes to an excellent initial feel and excellent brake lever feel.

Front braking progression is much better than that of the Interceptor 650 and Continental GT, both of which have sluggish braking progression. Even though the rear braking isn’t the best we’ve experienced, the single 220mm disc brake does a good job of securing the bike. However, the initial bite is not as good as the configuration before. The front and rear are also fitted with ABS as standard.

3 The ergonomics have nothing to complain about

This allows the rider to lean forward adequately, making it a slightly sporty riding position. However, you can also sit up straight and roll around in a relaxed position. Even the passenger will also appreciate the not-so-high rear footrests and plush seats that Kawasaki offers for this retro motorcycle.

The 2022 Kawasaki Z650RS is unchanged from the outgoing 2021 model and therefore the overall build quality remains the same as well. Being a Kawasaki, all switchgears and other touch points are far superior to most rivals like the 2022 Royal Enfield Continental GT and the Ducati Scrambler Icon Dark. All of the switches on the handlebars have a click feel, which is a good thing.

Apart from that, the panels, the tank, the footrests, etc. feel securely assembled and offer no kind of vibrations. Being a Kawasaki, which comes with the parallel twin engine, the bike will also be extremely reliable. Many Z650 and Ninja 650 owners have reported only doing regular oil and filter changes up to the 100,000 mile mark, and the same can be expected with the Z650RS.
